ECM TRANSPORT Working in Real-Time!
ECM TRANSPORT is currently in the process of installing a Qualcomm’s Mobile Computing Platform 100 series (MCP100) on its fleet of 300 trucks. This type of onboard mobile information technology has proven beneficial in improving overall operational efficiency, as well as providing customers with real-time confirmation they need in today’s business environment.
The implementation of this project started February 23, 2009, and will be completed at all ten ECM terminal locations by August, 2009. Because the MCP100 integrates to ECM’s transportation management system, accurate, real-time data and operational updates are available to dispatchers and other back-office personnel; making the management of truckload shipments faster while improving communication between operations and the driver. As a result, truckload customers will soon be able to experience real-time tracking and tracing. ECM TRANSPORT will provide these real-time updates via our secure website, as well as through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
Driver tasks will also be made easier with Qualcomm’s built-in GPS systems including text-to-speech capability for navigation and incoming emails or messages from dispatch. While the tractor is not idling, drivers will have access to over-the-road email and electronic DOT logs.
Qualcomm’s MCP100 offers Performance Monitoring service with Fuel Manager, which will document equipment performance such as the idling and shifting of trucks. This will help ECM improve its MPG program by directly reducing company costs associated with diesel fuel and reduce harmful emissions. In order to alert management of reoccurring poor driving habits, Qualcomm’s Critical Event Reporting service will help to identify those drivers in need of further training. Management will then work with the driver to improve his or her driving, creating a safer work environment.
Ed Meier, President of ECM says: “We are very excited to be collaborating with Qualcomm as they are an industry pioneer in mobile communications. This mobile information platform will be of significant value to our customers, as well as our business. We have always prided ourselves on being ‘customer driven’ and this is another example of our commitment. In addition to providing dynamic information to our customers, it will enhance our business through improved communication with our drivers, improved safety, increased operating efficiencies and cost reductions.”
ECM TRANSPORT, headquartered in New Kensington, Pennsylvania is a haz-mat certified, asset-based truckload carrier, with the ability to service all 48 states and Canada.
